A new species of leaf warbler (Sylviidae: Phylloscopus ) is described from the mountain Emei Shan, Sichuan Province, China. Morphologically it is extremely similar to, yet significantly different from, the sympatric Blyth's Leaf Warbler Phylloscopus reguloides and White-tailed Leaf Warbler Phylloscopus davisoni. Songs and calls are both very different from P. reguloides and P. davisoni, and playback tests confirmed the specific status of the new species.  相似文献

Petal venation in families related to the Asteraceae was studied by means of light microscopy. The group of study was delimited on the base of previously published molecular data and includes the Alseuosmiaceae, Apiaceae, Aquifoliaceae, Araliaceae, Argophyllaceae, Bruniaceae, Brunoniaceae, Calyceraceae, Campanulaceae sensu lato , Caprifoliaceae, Donatiaceae, Dipsacaceae, Escalloniaceae, Goodeniaceae, Griseliniaceae, Menyanthaceae, Pentaphragmataceae, Pittosporaceae, Sambucaceae, Sphenocleaceae, Stylidiaceae, Valerianaceae, and Viburnaceae. The Calyceraceae, Goodeniaceae, and Menyanthaceae are very similar to the Asteraceae in their petal venation. One feature common to these four families but not found in any other group is the prominent marginal veins entering the petal independently of the midvein, but meeting it at the apex of the petal. Other morphological data as well as gene sequence data suggest that these four families form a monophyletic group. The other investigated families show a wide array of venation types, but they are all very different from the Asteraceae. Typical for die Campanulaceae sensu lato is a densely reticulate pattern. The Dipsacaceae, Valerianaceae and some Caprifoliaceae are characterized by well-developed transpetal veins.  相似文献

In a laboratory experiment interaction effects of UV-B and CO2 on photosynthesis and growth of the moss Hylocomium splendens were studied. The plants were exposed to two CO2 levels (350 ppm and 600 ppm) and three UV-B levels (no UV-B, ambient UV-B and that corresponding to 20% ozone depletion) for 5 months. The effects were recorded by measuring the photosynthetic response and growth of the plants. There was a statistically significant change in photosynthetic efficiency and maximum photosynthetic rates due to time and to enhanced CO2 concentration, whereas there was no effect due to UV-B. There was a decreased growth due to both UV-B and CO2 and an interaction effect on growth (in length). The UV-B dose corresponding to the ambient level had a larger reducing effect on growth than the highest UV-B dose. This was a counter-intuitive result and the following tentative interpretation was made: differences in the measured UV-A/UV-B/PAR ratios between the treatments could explain the result provided there was a non-linear response to UV over the range of irradiance levels used.  相似文献

In embryos of the white mutant axolotl, prospective pigment cells are unable to migrate from the neural crest (NC) due to a deficiency in the subepidermal extracellular matrix (ECM). This raises the question of the molecular nature of this functional defect. Some PGs can inhibit cell migration on ECM molecules in vitro, and an excess of this class of molecules in the migratory pathways of neural crest cells might cause the restricted migration of prospective pigment cells seen in the white mutant embryo. In the present study, we use several monoclonal antibodies against epitopes on keratan sulphate (KS) and chondroitin sulphate (CS) and LM immunofluorescence to examine the distribution of these glycosaminoglycans at initial (stage 30) and advanced (stage 35) stages of neural crest cell migration. Most KS epitopes are more widely distributed in the white mutant than in the wild type embryo, whereas CS epitopes show very similar distributions in mutant and wild type embryos. This is confirmed quantitatively by immunoblotting: certain KS epitopes are more abundant in the white mutant. TEM immunogold staining reveals that KS as well as CS are present both in the basal lamina and in the interstitial ECM in both types of embryos. It remains to be investigated whether the abundance of certain KS epitopes in the white mutant embryo might contribute to the deficiency in supporting pigment cell migration shown by its ECM.  相似文献

We re‐evaluate the characteristics of the little‐known Large‐billed Reed Warbler Acrocephalus orinus based on plumage and biometrical comparisons of 10 newly discovered specimens of A. orinus with a large sample of Blyth’s Reed Warbler Acrocephalus dumetorum, the species most closely resembling A. orinus. Using specimens whose identity was verified by DNA analyses, we found that the most important criteria for identifying orinus are its long and comparatively broad bill, with typically uniformly dark upper mandible, and on average longer tarsi and claws with a thin and pointed hind claw. In contrast, previously suggested differences in wing formula, plumage colour and shape of flight‐feathers are very minor, variable and seem of limited use for identification of orinus. Graphical analysis of hind claw length against bill to skull length should assist researchers in locating museum or live specimens of orinus that otherwise might be overlooked as dumetorum, and multivariate analysis unambiguously separates the two species based on our present dataset. A review of the scattered literature and specimen records suggests that the breeding distribution of orinus lies between southeastern Kazakhstan and northeastern Afghanistan, within the breeding range of dumetorum, but that orinus may well winter predominantly east of the main wintering range of dumetorum. Further evidence to support this assessment of the species' breeding range was obtained in June 2009, with the discovery of a population in the Pamir Mountains of Afghanistan.  相似文献

Interactions between saprotrophic and ectomycorrhizal fungi have been largely ignored, although their mycelia often share the same microsites. The mycelial systems show general similarity to each other and, although the enzymatic potential of the saprotrophic fungi is generally considered to be higher, the importance of organic nutrient sources to ectomycorrhizal fungi is now widely accepted. In the experiments described here, nutritional interactions involving transfer of elements from one mycelium to the other have been monitored dynamically using radioactive tracers and a non-destructive electronic autoradiography system. Microcosms were used in which mycelial systems of the ectomycorrhizal fungi Suillus variegatus and Paxillus involutus , extending from Pinus sylvestris host plants, were confronted with mycelia of the saprotroph Hypholoma fasciculare extending from wood blocks. The fungi showed a clear morphological confrontation response. The mycorrhizal mycelium often formed dense patches over the Hypholoma mycelia. Up to 25% of the 32P present in the Hypholoma mycelium was captured by the mycorrhizal fungi and translocated to the plant host within 30 d. The transfer of 32P to the saprotroph from labelled mycorrhizal mycelium was one to two orders of magnitude lower. The significance of this transfer as a 'short cut' in nutrient cycling is discussed.  相似文献

The Arctic Warbler Phylloscopus borealis breeds across the northern Palaearctic and northwestern‐most Nearctic, from northern Scandinavia to Alaska, extending south to southern Japan, and winters in Southeast Asia, the Philippines and Indonesia. Several subspecies have been described based on subtle morphological characteristics, although the taxonomy varies considerably among different authors. A recent study (T. Saitoh et al. (2010) BMC Evol. Biol. 10 : 35) identified three main mitochondrial DNA clades, corresponding to: (1) continental Eurasia and Alaska, (2) south Kamchatka, Sakhalin and northeast Hokkaido, and (3) most of Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu). These three clades were estimated to have diverged during the late Pliocene to early Pleistocene (border at c. 2.6 million years ago). Differences in morphometrics have also been reported among members of the three clades (T. Saitoh et al. (2008) Ornithol. Sci. 7 : 135–142). Here we analyse songs and calls from throughout the range of the Arctic Warbler, and conclude that these differ markedly and consistently among the populations representing the three mitochondrial clades. Kurile populations, for which no sequence data are available, are shown to belong to the second clade. To determine the correct application of available scientific names, mitochondrial DNA was sequenced from three name‐bearing type specimens collected on migration or in the winter quarters. Based on the congruent variation in mitochondrial DNA, morphology and vocalizations, we propose that three species be recognized: Arctic Warbler Phylloscopus borealis (sensu stricto) (continental Eurasia and Alaska), Kamchatka Leaf Warbler Phylloscopus examinandus (Kamchatka (at least the southern part), Sakhalin, Hokkaido and Kurile Islands), and Japanese Leaf Warbler Phylloscopus xanthodryas (Japan except Hokkaido).  相似文献
